Toppings like chopped nuts and raisins are optional. Fried Ice stalls often set up late in the evening, appearing around 9 or 10 PM in markets or snack street areas.

Qingbuliang is a cool refreshing sweet dessert soup commonly sold from small carts on blisteringly hot Hainanese evenings. Common ingredients include dates, mung beans, barley, taro, watermelon, quail eggs, and nuts, but you can choose which you want, with a cold coconut milk or sweet syrup base.

This luscious treat is made from frozen flavored milk and sugar, much like ice cream. It is poured in soft, layered mounds onto a dish, where it resembles a pillowy pile of colorful cotton. Cool and refreshing, this sweet treat is just the thing to beat the heat!
Haikou’s Volcano Litchi 海口火山荔枝
What does a volcano taste like? It’s sweet and juicy! Well, that’s what the litchi fruit that grows on the Haikou volcano tastes like, anyway! The rich volcanic soil and warm Hainan weather result in spectacular litchi with skins so red you could almost believe that they are covered in hot lava. There are several litchi orchards in the Haikou Volcano area where you can spend the day picking your own litchi, hiking the volcano trails, and eating the fruits of your own labor.

Don’t let the funny name keep you from trying this tasty Hainan dessert soup! The “chicken droppings” are actually made from a mixture of ground fevervine leaves, flour, and sugar. Nothing that actually comes from a chicken! The mixture is formed into small round balls, and cooked in a broth of coconut milk or ginger water. This dessert soup is not only refreshing and sweet, but is also known throughout Hainan as a health tonic.
