Charming Hainan, Enchanting Malaysia - Episode 2: Chicken Rice Reunion Feast

By / HIMC / Updated: 18:46,29-August-2025

A single dish of chicken rice carries more than flavor—it carries kinship and nostalgia across the seas. Episode Two explores how Hainan Wenchang Chicken and Hainanese Chicken Rice in Malaysia embody migration stories, family traditions, and enduring cultural bonds.

In Kuala Lumpur, the team visited the famed “Nasi Ayam Chee Meng,” restaurant, where owner Yeok Ah Kim recounted how his parents started from a humble stall in 1965. Through perseverance and passion, their chicken rice grew from a modest dish into a culinary emblem, drawing visitors worldwide who say: “You haven’t really been to Kuala Lumpur if you haven’t had chicken rice.”

Back in Hainan, Su Xiaoying, a third-generation representative of the Yonghong Wenchang Chicken tradition, shared her family’s journey of devotion across three generations. From childhood memories in rubber plantations to promoting Wenchang Chicken abroad, she explained that this dish is more than food—it showcases the craftsmanship, heritage, and deep warmth of the Hainan spirit.

From Kuala Lumpur to Qionghai, from table to heart, chicken rice transcends oceans, reuniting not only flavors, but a shared lineage and an everlasting sense of belonging.
