Charming Hainan, Enchanting Malaysia - Episode 1:Tea-Table Tropics

By / / Updated: 18:44,29-August-2025

In a land where one kind of “tea” is actually coffee, the name Hainan carries the legacy and wisdom of the island’s early migrants to Southeast Asia. Hainan Tea — a unique coffee-based beverage born out of necessity and creativity — embodies both culinary and cultural fusion. Concocted generations ago, it has since taken the Malaysian Peninsula by storm. Its name reflects the migrants’ longing for home in a faraway land, as well as their homage to the place and people who welcomed them.

Laobacha (Old Dad’s Tea), on the other hand, is a distinctly homegrown phenomenon. Offering an array of teas, coffees, salted lemonade, pastries, and dim sum, it can be found on nearly every street corner in Hainan. More than just a meal, Laobacha is a byword for the islanders’ relaxed pace of life and long-celebrated spirit of tolerance and openness.

In both Malaysia and Hainan, the story of “tea” goes far beyond the leaves themselves. It is a blending of cultures, a spark of ingenuity, and a comforting taste of home.

Be it coffee or tea, both are part of a shared global family. Among their leaves and grounds lies a tale of Hainan–Malaysia friendship.
