A gibbon named Loongloong, wielding a camera beside a cascading waterfall in Hainan's rainforest, has become an unlikely digital ambassador for China's ecological philosophy. In the AI-powered animation short film Whispers from the Canopy: Gibbon Loongloong's Global Journey, Loongloong's quest transforms from local wildlife observer to international eco-advocate, embodying the idea that "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets."
The short film unfolds as Loongloong joins the "Eco Ambassador" campaign, embarking on a globe-trotting mission. From Africa's Sahel zone, where grid-patterned tamarisk forests halt desertification, to the Amazon's canopy where parrots and sloths pioneer "aerial seeding" to heal deforested gaps, the film illustrates ecological restoration in action. In Australia's Great Barrier Reef, parrotfish "renovate" coral beds with their nutrient-rich droppings, while in the Arctic, a polar bear's struggle on melting ice underscores climate urgency.
Thanks to the up-to-date photo editing AI large language model upon which a LoRa (Low-Rank Adaptation) model is trained, gibbon Loongloong turns out with consistent expressions and body language across varied scenes, settings, and outfits. "We wanted the audience to feel the heartbeat of the forest," said the director. "AI has allowed us to recreate environments with emotional authenticity and visual spectacle, turning data into empathy," the AI visual architect added.

The film aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals 13 (Climate Action) and 15 (Life on Land), showcasing how China's "Two Mountains Theory" offers transferable and replicable approaches. Techniques like seed dispersal mimicry and sand-fixation grids, inspired by Chinese conservation models, have been adapted across continents, proving local solutions can have planetary impact.
At the end of the film, Loongloong humbably rejects the "Eco Ambassador" title, declaring the award belongs to all species fighting for survival. "This honor belongs to all living beings," he proclaims.
As the final frame fades to a trophy flying through a global montage, the message lingers: true progress lies not in conquering nature, but in listening to its whispers — for lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets.
