Young people are the most vigorous and enterprising… A nation will be full of hope and have a great tomorrow when its younger generations have ideals, ability, and a strong sense of responsibility.
"The Power of Youth and Dreams," a series co-created by Hinews and Hainan International Media Center, puts the spotlight on ten Chinese and foreign young people who have pursued their aspirations and forged shining stories rooted in openness and innovation during their many years in Hainan and China. Through their actions, they demonstrate their shouldering of social responsibility, becoming a bridge for intercultural exchanges. Their stories motivate others to realize their dreams in China and contribute their efforts to building a community with a shared future for mankind.
In 2014, after his third application, David Mouk from the Republic of Congo finally got the opportunity to study for a master's degree in marine biology at Hainan University. A musician since childhood, David built on his experience forming his own band during college to collect talented musicians from around Haikou and gradually transitioned from dreaming of a career in oceanography to a career as a full-time music teacher. By the end of his grad student years, he was not only a popular attendee at the city's jam sessions but had also begun to train people musically.
As a music teacher, one of the biggest things David has noticed is how Chinese music education focuses on different concepts. "For me, while I obviously want my students to learn how to play, my real goal is for them to learn how to understand and love music." David firmly believes that music is an indispensable part of life.
When talking about the future, David said: “China is one of the few places in the world where you don't have to be a superstar to be a full-time musician. As long as you focus on this career, you have the opportunity to be successful.”
