It’s orange harvest season in Hainan. British content creator Harvey Charles visited Limushan Town in central Hainan’s Qiongzhong county to see the action unfold at Hainan Xiang’er Ecological Agriculture Green Orange Plantation. What greeted him was row upon row of leafy orange trees heavy with juicy, sweet fruits, the green oranges for which Qiongzhong is famed.

Qiongzhong Green Oranges, capitalized because they are officially a brand and recipient of Hainan Province’s first geographical indication (GI) certificate, boast green peels and grow in green environs. Located at 18 degrees north latitude, Qiongzhong boasts selenium-rich soil and ample rain and sunshine, bringing nature’s sweetness to each orange.

At Qiongzhong Green Orange Plantation, Harvey and his friends challenged each other to compare the sweetness of green oranges, gleefully confirming their results using specialized equipment. The sweetness of this variety of orange typically measures around 10-11 Bx, with some reaching as high as 15-16 Bx. In addition to its tangy sweetness, this fruit is rich in pectin and nutrients such as vitamins B1, B2, and C. Its flesh is juicy and plump and, when juiced, produces a fine pulp.
The green oranges that grow here under entirely natural conditions have thin peels, fine, juicy flesh, and a refreshing texture. “I never imagined that green oranges could be so sweet and delicious. When I first saw them, I thought that green peel meant they weren’t ripe and would taste astringent,” said Harvey.

The workers on the plantation, straw hats on their heads, smile happily at the prospect of a good harvest as they move from tree to tree picking ripe oranges. On this particular day, Harvey joined them, not only in picking but also on the sorting floor, where he could be seen carefully packing graded oranges into a box ready to send home to his friends and family.
