On Aug. 28, according to Haikou Customs, nearly nine tons of Baisha Tea produced by the Hainan Agricultural Reclamation Baisha Tea Company set sail for Nigeria, marking the first time this tea has been exported to Africa.

Baisha Li Autonomous County, located in the green heart of the province of Hainan, boasts a forest coverage rate of 83.17% as well as abundant natural resources. The area’s large meteor crater benefits from a unique environment, abundant rainfall, and plentiful minerals, which together produce high quality Baisha Tea.

In March, at an investment promotion meeting, the Baisha tea company discovered that there is a market for black tea in Nigeria, and that Hainan tea is highly regarded in the country. After two months of negotiation, Nigeria’s Klobell Company ordered a large shipment of five gram black tea bags worth a total of $295,000, which were exported on August 28.

To support the export of Baisha tea to Africa, eight Haikou Customs officials visited the company to provide additional services such as giving guidelines on the filing, registration & quarantine process, field management, processing & packaging, warehousing, and transportation. They also assisted by optimizing the inspection and quarantine process, simplifying customs procedures, and ensuring that customs clearance was handled without delay so that Hainan’s premium agricultural products can be easily exported around the world.

In the first seven months of 2024, Hainan’s eight customs departments oversaw the import and export of agricultural products worth a total of 87.404 million yuan, an increase of 20.4% over the same period last year.
