Public schools

High-level foreign talents (Grade A-E) recognized at the provincial level may enroll their children in public schools and kindergartens in Hainan. To do so, you need to submit an application to the local education authority. Grade A and  B talents may enrol their children at any school. Grade C, D and E talents can enroll their children at the public school within their community. Some public schools have international sections and can take in international students.

Expats with permanent residence can use their permanent resident ID card when applying for school enrollment for their children. Their children can enrol at public kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and secondary vocational schools in Hainan, take part in the high school entrance examination, and apply to participate in the college entrance examination (subject to some conditions).

Expats who do not have permanent residence can enrol their children at schools qualified to enrol foreign students within the province. School enrollment and transfer procedures are the same as those followed by local Chinese residents based on registration information from the immigration administration. Such students are eligible for the same compulsory education as Chinese nationals.

Private schools

There are numerous private schools across Hainan that offer Chinese-language or bilingual education to Chinese and foreign children. You can contact these schools directly regarding admission.

International schools

Hainan currently has two schools for children of international residents: Harrow International School Haikou and the International School of Sanya, which offer kindergarten, primary, junior high, and high school education. Public schools such as Hainan Middle School and Hainan Overseas Chinese Middle School are working with schools in the US, the UK, and other countries to provide more schooling options for the children of international residents of Hainan.
