Hainan to hold annual Sanyuesan Festival in Ledong and Wuzhishan

In 2023, Hainan’s “Sanyuesan Festival” - a Li and Miao ethnic minority holiday that takes place on the third day of the third month of the lunar calendar - will include an amazing wealth of events and activities.

Of all the holidays and festivals celebrated by the Li and Miao ethnic groups, Sanyuesan is the most colorful, most beautiful, and most interesting.

An annual traditional festival of Hainan’s indigenous people, it’s a not-to-be-missed extravaganza.

The majority of this year’s Sanyuesan festivities will take place from April 22 to the 24th in Ledong Li Autonomous County and Wuzhishan City.

Some of the many aspects of the traditional Sanyuesan Festival celebrated by the Li and Miao people of Hainan include remembering their ancestors and celebrating their descendants. Traditionally, the Li people are an ethnic group with a strong habit of filial piety. Ancestor worship has always played a key role in their ordinary lives. Paw Long Kow is not just the most important of the Li’s ancestral gods, he is also the nutrient that sustains the spirit of the Li.
