On May 17th, Hainan organized the fourth session of rice selection and evaluation activity in Sanya.
At the event, nine extension experts and researchers in the rice industry and two judges tasted each of the 39 rice varieties, commenting on them by smell, appearance and taste.
“Good rice should look nice and clean, taste sweet, smell good and be neatly arranged. The fragrance should sharpen the appetite of people,” said Cao Bing, Vice President of Hainan University
The event also conducted, for the first time, a special rice variety review, and will gradually draft the selection criteria for special rice varieties with Hainan characteristics such as Shanlan rice and glutinous rice, so as to fuel the development of Hainan's rice deep processing industry. Next, the seed bank of Hainan Province will further demonstrate the golden awards winners to increase their production, meeting the people's consumption needs.
Liu Chunguang, Director-General of Hainan Seed Bank highlighted,“Hainan’s local rice varieties will definitely contribute to the revitalization of our seed industry.”
