On January 16, Haikou’s Meilan District started filming videos showing intangible cultural heritage items such as the Hainan Tiger Dance, the Li Dish and Fan Dance, and the Hainan Puppet Show to broadcast online before Spring Festival. This activity aims to raise the awareness of the city’s wonderful local traditional culture, popularize folk art, and create an atmosphere of happiness and joy to celebrate the Spring Festival.
As a multi-ethnic province, Hainan has rich, colorful local traditional folk culture and art. During Spring Festival, traditional folk performers will be invited to villages to perform folk arts such as the Hainan Tiger Dance, the Li Dish and Fan Dance, and the Hainan Puppet Show. The Hainan Tiger Dance, combining dance, martial arts and music, was brought to Hainan from the Central Plains during the Ming Dynasty and is now popular in the area near Sanjiang Town in Meilan District, Haikou. The Li Dish and Fan Dance is a traditional folk dance that uses common household items such as dishes and cups as props, and is popular in the northern and eastern areas of Hainan. Originating from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), the Hainan Puppet Show is performed in local languages and is popular in Haikou and Wenchang.
