From January to October of 2021, Haikou’s ambient air quality ranked the best of 168 key cities in China.
The government of Haikou City has done a lot to protect the environment, such as tightening controls on pollution caused by manufacturing, increasing environmental law enforcement, continuing to reduce PM2.5 concentration, effectively controlling ozone and the concentration of volatile organic compounds, and more.
In October 2021, Haikou’s air quality was generally good. Typically, the PM2.5 concentration in Haikou was the lowest in the nearly 10 years since the implementation of the new environmental air quality standard in 2012.
*Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is an air pollutant that is a concern for people's health when levels in the air are high. PM2.5 are tiny particles in the air that reduce visibility and cause the air to appear hazy when levels are elevated.
*Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects.
