Located in the central-southern region of Hainan Island, Wuzhishan is famous for being one of the best-preserved tropical rainforests in the world and was named one of China's natural oxygen bars by the China Meteorological Administration in 2020.
In addition to the Chinese Sweet Gum found in the area’s tropical rainforests, Wuzhishan’s red-leaved trees also include the Kalkora silk tree and Mountain Crab Apple thanks to the rich bio-diversity here.
According to local residents, when the temperature drops in autumn and winter, the color of the leaves of the Sweet Gum tree change from green to yellow, and then to red. The lower the temperature is, the redder the leaves get. The temperature difference also makes the leaves at the foot of the mountain and those on the hillside take on different colors. Sometimes one tree will even show leaves of multiple different colors!
Generally speaking, the leaves in Wuzhishan begin to turn yellow and red at the end of October, and are completely red from November until February. The most recommended time to view the red leaves here is from the end of November to December.
