The Sanyuesan Festival, which falls on the third day of the third lunar month, is an annual traditional event for the Li and Miao people to pay respects to their ancestors, celebrate a new year, and pray for a better life, as well as a special festival that provides unmarried young people an opportunity to find love. This year, as the Sanyuesan Festival fell on April 14, cities and counties around Hainan celebrated the festival with a variety of Li and Miao cultural activities.
In Sanya
On April 13, Sanya held traditional sports competitions such as climbing palm trees and crossing a single-plank bridge with a shoulder pole at the Tianya Haijiao (End of the Earth) Park, creating a festive atmosphere for local Li and Miao people and showing the cultural charm of this festival to visitors.
In Qiongzhong
On the evening of April 13, a themed gala featuring traditional Li and Miao music and dance was held in Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County to kick off the Sanyuesan Festival.
In Ledong
Li and Miao people in Ledong began celebrating the traditional Sanyuesan Festival on April 13. Activities included folk song competitions, a themed gala, a Li Brocade, Miao Embroidery, and paper-cutting competition, a sports competition, a specialty product sales exhibition, and more.
In Dongfang
On April 13, a Sanyuesan Festival and the Fragrant Rosewood Festival themed event was held at the Citizen Leisure Plaza in Dongfang City. The performances, infused with Li and Miao culture and Fragrant Rosewood culture, presented an audio-visual feast to the audience.
In Wuzhishan
On April 14, a ceremony honoring Paolongkou (the ancestor of the Li People) was held at Lidong Culture Park, Shuiman Town, Wuzhishan City. Li people from across Hainan gathered together to pay homage to Paolongkou and commemorate the glory of their mighty ancestor.
