Known as the “Kidneys of the Earth”, wetlands play an important role in storing and cleaning water, keeping us fed, and providing nature a home, as well as underpinning our global economy.

Every year on February 2, World Wetlands Day (WWD) is celebrated to help raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and our planet. This February 2 is the twenty-fifth World Wetlands Day. One of the world's leading experts on biodiversity and the environment, Dr. John Mackinnon, and Executive Director of the Ramsar Regional Centre – East Asia, Mr. Suh Seung Oh, sent videos on the event of World Wetlands Day Hainan and talked about the conservation and development of wetlands.

Dr. John Mackinnon said: “I used to spend a lot of time in Hainan. I miss very much the mangroves and other wetlands, and shorebirds of Hainan.”He also showed the wetlands in England in his video, including birds like the beautiful kestrel hovering over the wetlands, amphibians, and even mammals that are only found in wetlands. The existence of these animals all depends on maintaining a clean water supply. He explained that Wetlands Day is an international day, and that wetlands are very important all over the world.

Mr. Suh Seung Oh said: “I sincerely appreciate Haikou City, one of the first globally accredited Wetland Cities, for inviting me to this meaningful celebration of World Wetlands Day 2021. I hope this celebration will be remembered as an excellent example for all other cities around the world and leave meaningful messages to all.” He also suggests that it is needed to build up a system of awareness-raising, education in schools, tailored capacity building programs for wetland managers, and communication channels between wetland stakeholders including government authorities and law enforcement against harmful activities in wetlands. He hopes that Haikou will be able to create a system successfully with the current excellent environment, people, and policies, and that the city of Haikou becomes a shining model for all other cities around the world.
