Canadian Greg Turner, known in Chinese as Du Wei, has lived in China for 25 years. A chance visit to Wanning with his Chinese wife, Xiaoying, introduced them to the city's laid-back lifestyle and inspired a major career change.
The couple started their business with a small ice cream truck. As life and business partners, they worked side by side on everything from developing flavors to designing the shop's interior, gradually turning it into the warm, welcoming space it is today.
Not long after opening the shop, they welcomed their daughter, Hailey, whose arrival brought unexpected joy and a whole new level of busyness.

Today, their recipe collection features more than 50 ice cream flavors, and their daughter is now old enough to help her dad carry supplies to the shop.
From mango and wampee to Xinglong chocolate, their colorful creations are more than sweet treats; they reflect a philosophy of using natural, seasonal ingredients. Wahoo is more than a business, too; it’s part of the family’s dream of living a peaceful life by the sea.
Before opening the shop, Greg spent more than 20 years working in live entertainment and venue operations in China. He believes Hainan's outdoor environment and abundant natural resources have enormous potential for sports development, something which has prompted him to return to his former field of live events and venue management.
To Greg, Hainan's diverse landscapes are much like Wahoo's ice cream flavors, each offering something unique. From surfing along the coast to rock climbing in the mountains, he sees plenty of opportunities to explore and looks forward to what the island’s future will bring.
The philosophy behind Greg and Xiaoying’s little shop is written right on its wall:
Everything is better with ice cream.
