Bernama journalists film a program on Hainan's Laoba Tea culture.
A four-member crew from the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) arrived in Haikou on July 5 at the invitation of the Hainan International Media Center (HIMC) to start a week-long reporting trip across the province.
They will create a 30-minute documentary titled 2026: Towards the Hainan Free Trade Port, highlighting the trade opportunities brought by the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP) after the launch of island-wide special customs operations and the expanding potential for cooperation between ASEAN businesses and Hainan.
The project marks the latest collaboration between HIMC and Bernama, building on their previous joint work, Charming Hainan, Enchanting Malaysia, in 2025.
With the Hainan FTP now six months into special customs operations, the team will document developments on the ground through unbiased reporting and firsthand observations.

A four-member crew from Bernama arrived in Haikou on July 5.
The team includes print journalist Yat Yu Mi, broadcast journalist Nur Aiman Najwa Dzamae, and two video journalists, all of whom are visiting Hainan for the first time. Through on-camera reporting and immersive experiences, they will explore the province and its development prospects from the viewpoint of young Malaysians.
Yat Yu Mi expressed her particular interest in documenting real-world examples of cross-border trade facilitation, tourism exchanges, education cooperation, and business investment. This focus follows the launch of special customs operations and aims to showcase opportunities that audiences can easily relate to.
Nur Aiman Najwa Dzamae mentioned that the crew intends to film at various sites, such as surfing spots, an international education zone, and Yangpu Port, highlighting the Hainan FTP's growth across tourism, education, logistics, and other industries through on-site coverage.
From July 5 to 11, the production team will visit several locations, including Haikou, Qionghai, Wanning, Lingshui, Sanya, and Danzhou. Their itinerary features sites such as Haikou Fullsing Town Internet Innovation Park, Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, Riyue Bay Surfing Base, Lingshui Li'an International Education Innovation Pilot Zone, Yangpu International Container Terminal, and Sanya International Yachting Center.
The team will undertake field visits and conduct in-depth interviews across sectors like trade, tourism, education, healthcare, and culture.
Once finished, the documentary will be shared through Bernama's multimedia platforms across ASEAN, providing regional viewers with an unbiased overview of the Hainan FTP's progress and its expanding collaboration with nearby economies.
