On Oct. 16, the Media Tour of Hainan took domestic and international journalists from west to east across Hainan Island, making stops along the way at the Yangpu International Container Terminal, the Hainan Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, and the Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, where they explored the openness, vitality, and international character of the Hainan Free Trade Port across multiple sectors including shipping, education, and healthcare.
A Future Without Limits in Yangpu
As the first rays of morning sunlight beam down onto the Yangpu International Container Terminal, they illuminate an already bustling scene of gleaming steel.
"How will the terminal cope with increasing shipping demands after the FTP begins special customs operations?" "How will the 'China Yangpu Port' port of registry policy attract more international ships?" In response to enthusiastic questions from members of the media, Xu Linxiang, deputy general manager of the production and operation center of the Hainan Port and Shipping International Port Company responded with data. The terminal currently boasts a multi-tiered berth complex, including a 200,000-ton ship berth, and a total shoreline of 1,482 meters, making the port capable of accommodating the world's largest container ships. To meet future demand, a terminal expansion project is progressing at full speed, adding 488 meters of shoreline to create a "double 200,000-ton berth" structure. Upon completion, the terminal's annual throughput capacity is expected to exceed 5 million TEUs.
Ge Liqiao, Director of the Shipping Development Promotion Department of the Hainan Ship Registration Administration, gave a further introduction to the "China Yangpu Port" port of registry policy, pointing out the open system created through a combination of "zero tariff" policies, value-added tax refunds, and the expansion of policy benefits for financial institutions, comprehensively enhancing shipping competitiveness.
Today, Yangpu Port operates thirty-one international trade routes, fifteen domestic trade routes, and eleven domestic and international trade routes, reaching over twenty countries and regions. At this globally oriented shipping hub, policies and infrastructure join forces to chart a clear future.
BiUH: Opening the Door to New Educational Possibilities
Departing from the bustling docks, the media delegation soon entered the lushly landscaped campus of the Hainan Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences (BiUH), where they felt the vibrant energy of the school’s open education model.
"We are the first independently run German public university in China, and also the only one in the Hainan Free Trade Port." The school's vice president Pei Yuting revealed the milestone significance of the school's establishment.
In the classrooms, the reporters were greeted by ‘study abroad style’ full English language instruction as well as a multilingual environment. Germany’s practical hands-on educational model connects students closely to cutting edge industry practices.
Jing Yujuan, a student from Chongqing, spoke to the international media in fluent English, discussing her studies and future plans, earning praise from the reporters. Phoenix TV reporter Li Tingshen exclaimed, "This place has both an academic atmosphere and an international flair. It's opened my eyes to a new dimension in higher education."
The ‘China-Germany Friendship Bridge’, which stands silently between the campus buildings, is not only a connection between spaces but also a symbol of the integration of educational resources and dreams for cultivating talent that both countries share.
Boao Medical Tourism: Experience Worth Sharing
The media tour continued east, arriving at the Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone in the afternoon, where they checked out the ‘Never-ending’ International Innovative Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Exhibition.
In the exhibition hall, a total of 810 innovative products from 80 manufacturers in 16 countries are on display, more than half of which have not yet been launched in China’s domestic market or are being exhibited for the first time.
"We are synchronizing our pharmaceutical, medical device, and medical technology standards with internationally advanced levels," Zhang Yanning, senior director of the Medical Tourism Department of the Lecheng Pilot Zone Administration, told reporters. This not only helps Chinese medical innovations gain international recognition, but also accelerates the entry of advanced pharmaceuticals and medical devices from abroad into the Chinese market. "The ultimate goal is to enable Chinese people to use world-leading health products more quickly."
"Lecheng is truly a hub for medical innovation, and has achieved tangible results," an international media reporter said after the visit. "With the Hainan Free Trade Port's special customs operations progressing, the experience here is worth spreading to more regions."
