A Small Thai Shop Brings South Seas Culture to Hainan

Wu Shuzhen is a Thai woman descended from Overseas Hainanese forebears who migrated from Hainan to Thailand a century ago, making a living as carpenters and raising their children in a foreign land. A century after their epic journey, she has retraced their footsteps, returning to the Historic Qilou Brock in Haikou, Hainan, where she’s opened a Thai specialty store bringing the tropical-scented breezes of Southeast Asia to the Hainan Free Trade Port.

Wu doesn’t just sell Thai products, she also tells the story of her ancestors’ journey across Southeast Asia through fragrances. Her hand-crafted ‘Southeast Asian Style’ aromatherapy products each carry family memories, and each scent wafting on the breeze evokes a homesickness that transcends time.

Wu financially supports education in Hainan, and promotes cultural exchanges between China and Thailand. She’s not only bringing high-quality Thai products to Hainan, but also sharing Hainan's stories with a wider audience.

Chinese people roam the world, settling wherever they go. Every brick and tile of the Qilou Street is engraved with the stories of Hainanese who ventured across the South China Sea. The bluestone pavers of the street have seen many passersby, but the breezes of Southeast Asia still persist.

No matter how far you go, your heartstrings guide the way.
