Discovering Mysteries Season 3 Episode 9:The Secrets of Circles

The rainforest canopy is quite complex.

The Giant Taro, or Elephant Ear, located in the understory, can’t compete with tall trees for a spot in the sun.

Instead, it grows enormous leaves to catch every last bit of sunlight that filters through.

This is how it survives in the deep shade of the forest.

Every part of the Giant Taro is toxic.

This keeps it safe from most predators.

This bug, however, doesn’t mind a bit of extra work before dinner.

The Anchor Firefly Beetle (Aplosonyx ancora) is named for the black markings on its back that resemble an anchor.

It is an artist of the insect world drawing circles all its life just to stay alive.

It finds an area low in toxicity, and bites out a circle to sever the channels which transfer poison to parts of the leaf under attack.

It waits for the level of toxicity on its “private island” to drop and then begins to dine.

It seems like this insect is an expert in using geometry in real life.

But aren’t there easier ways to live?

Why work so hard for a simple meal?

We can’t understand fate, only choose to accept it.

There is a circle on this leaf too.

The Golden Tortoise Beetle has a round silhouette with a raised center and flattened edges.

The elytrum, or hardened forewing, has a transparent edge as well as the golden shape of a tortoise.

The bug looks remarkably similar to the toys of the 80’s.

The larva and the adult insect both harm the host plant, causing disease.

This beautiful exterior hides a villain’s heart.
