When you picture Hainan, do you imagine sunny beaches and resort hotels? You aren’t wrong! This time though, let’s take a trip to Dongfang - a lesser known, quirky little town full of unexpected wonders. Thrilling basketball games, awe inspiring scenery, vibrant cultural heritage, and tasty local eats are all here just waiting to be discovered!

The Village Basketball League of Dongfang may lack the glamour and polish of a professional sports competition, but what it lacks in official decorum it makes up in pure basketball passion. Players come from all walks of life, a motley crew of spectators cheers wildly, and every play captivates the whole crowd. Here, basketball is all about love, honor, and joy.

The exhilaration and bliss take hold in mere seconds, but last much longer. After the intense competition wraps up, let the sunning scenery of Dongfang keep the smile on your face as your heart rate slowly returns to normal.

Yulinzhou is located on a beach southwest of Basuo Town, Dongfang. The distinctive features of the area include a pebble beach, a lighthouse, and large wind turbines. The romantic coastline is the perfect place to watch the colorful sunset colors wash over the sea - this view is definitely worth the trip!

Next, check out the exceptional natural beauty of Dongfang’s Gancheng Bay: named one of Hainan’s most beautiful bays in 2023, the waters here play host to 116 species of phytoplankton, 57 species of zooplankton, and hundreds of species of larger sea creatures, making it a paradise for ocean lovers and anglers alike.

Even more exciting - many Class I protected bird species can be seen here! White spoonbills, black-faced spoonbills, ospreys, kestrels... the sight of these rare birds has attracted many bird watchers and photographers.

Continuing our journey through Dongfang, we next arrive at Exianling, known as the ‘Little Guilin’ of Hainan. Hike through the karst landforms and lush tropical rainforests, and let your spirit will be soothed by the tranquil beauty of nature.

Walking through Haidongfang Park is a relaxing way to spend the day. You don’t need to make any big plans or meet any urgent deadlines, just let the sea breeze caress your face, listen to the waves wash across the shore, and let your mind and soul rest.

The culture of Dongfang is both ancient and alive. In Baicha Village, the traditional boat-shaped thatched homes and magnificent brocades of the Li People are no longer just images in history books but ‘living fossils’ that can be touched and treasured. The qilou buildings of historic Beili Street silently tell stories that date back centuries while providing a gathering place for artists and art lovers.

Food is the most satisfying way to end our Dongfang journey. Crispy-skinned, tender roast suckling pig is the centerpiece of local banquets, while flavorful, rich ‘Lu Mian’ noodles are the breakfast of choice for local foodies. Up for something different? The Li people are known for their traditional fermented ‘fish tea’. The strong, sour fermented fish flavor is sure to awaken your senses and leave you with a unique Dongfang memory!

Head down to Dongfang, cheer on the basketball players, check out the local scenery, explore the culture, and taste all the flavors of the island cuisine - this little town is not to be missed!
