Rural revitalization hinges on industries. Hainan's path towards characteristic industries is broadening, from traditional natural rubber, coconut and betel nut, to new industries namely rosewood, agarwood, and camellia oleifera; fully reflecting Hainan's determination to improve people's livelihood.
Coconut has always been a cultural name card of Hainan. It has been planted in Hainan for more than 2,000 years. The planting area accounts for 99% of the total coconut cultivating area in China, with an annual output of 260 million. In 2021, the coconut harvesting area in Hainan was about 28,500 hectares, with a total output of 202 million.
In recent years, Hainan's rosewood industry has been developing rapidly, and the industrial formats have been continuously enriched. Various rosewood products, including rosewood tea, honey, wine, and incense have entered the market. As of December 2021, the planting area of Hainan rosewood is over 8,700 hectares. In the Yongtao Huali Valley Cultural Tourism Resort in Ledong County, Hainan province, a comprehensive cultural tourism resort focusing on rosewood cultivation and integrating tourism, agriculture and scientific research has been built, creating jobs for more than 500 local poverty-stricken households and villagers.
Wang Yongtao, President of the Hainan Yongtao Huali Valley Cultural Tourism Resort introduced, “This forest is fully utilized, for example, the star rooms, under-forest plantation and breeding; achieving the integration of food, shelter and amusement services.”
In addition to coconut and rosewood, Hainan agarwood is famous for its fresh and long-lasting aroma. At present, the province has established 8 agarwood planting bases in Danzhou, Chengmai, Ding'an and other places. Hainan optimizes agarwood technology, selects and breeds excellent agarwood varieties, and develops new products, initially forming the whole industry chain. At the same time, Hainan fosters and expands the leading enterprises to polish the agarwood brand, in a drive to spur the integrated development of agarwood planting, processing, pharmaceuticals, trade, tourism and more.
Lao Deng, Town Mayor of Jiale Township of Chengmai County announced, “We must improve the techniques of agarwood planting and processing, so as to generate more income for farmers.”
In Hainan, lush rubber forests can be seen everywhere. According to statistics, Hainan's rubber planting area and dry rubber output stand at more than half of the country's total, making Hainan the largest natural rubber production base in China. In 2021, the rubber harvesting area in Hainan surpassed 407,000 hectares, with a total output of 350,000 tons.
The "Six Trees" are not only natural endowments to Hainan, but also unique advantages for economic development, with more opportunities for cultivating new business formats and releasing new impetus and more featured industries boosting rural revitalization.
