Venues for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and supporting facilities in Beijing's Yanqing district were covered with their first snow over the weekend, presenting beautiful scenes as a welcome is prepared for athletes from around the world.

Snow began falling at 4 pm on Saturday in Yanqing. As of 11 am on Sunday, the average depth in the district had reached nearly 2 centimeters, according to the local meteorological service.

Snow removal work began immediately, with operations focusing on Olympic routes, core areas for the Games and surrounding key roads, authorities said.

Teams at the venues prepared early for the heavy snow. At 8 am on Saturday, all staff members were on duty and began applying snow-melting agents to roads at around 5 pm to ensure safe passage of vehicles.

The weekend snowfall served as practice for when snow comes during the Games. The personnel and equipment were assessed to detect problems so that services can be guaranteed for the events.
