Sanya currently has nearly 1,000 yachts, making it the leader in China’s yacht industry . The average number of boaters going to sea on yachts averages over 100,000 per month, and from January to July, 2021, those numbers were consistently higher than last year’s figures. Despite the influence of the epidemic, there has been a steady growth rate of 20%. Policies such as zero-tariff imports and yacht leasing management have ignited tourism spending. The first Yacht Design Award aims to promote Hainan as an international design island, to create local yacht design brands, and to extend the upstream yacht industry.

Based on the needs of the Chinese yacht market, this year's Award features three categories: mass-produced yacht design, superyacht design, and maritime cultural tourism platform design. There will be three gold prizes, three silver prizes, three bronze prizes, and several jury nominations in each of the three competition categories, with prize money up for grabs totaling 400,000 RMB.
