Jingdong, Alibaba, and 4 other major e-commerce platforms have signed commitments banning the sale of non-biodegradable plastic products with the Department of Commerce of Hainan Province. These e-commerce companies will be included in the supervision scope of the plastic ban.
"Hainan is the first province in the country to implement a region-wide ban on non-biodegradable plastic products, and the inclusion of e-commerce businesses into the scope of supervision has to be a gradual process," said Li Zhiping, the Market Construction Division Director of the Department of Commerce of Hainan Province. In April, the Department began sending related policy information to the major domestic e-commerce platforms and suggesting that these enterprises restrict the sale of banned plastic products. Comprehensive measures have been put in place to effectively eliminate non-degradable plastic products sold to customers in Hainan from the e-commerce platform. In order to accomplish this goal, the Department issued a letter of an initiative to Jingdong, Alibaba, and other e-commerce businesses operating in Hainan, asking them to sign a commitment letter.
Now, the main e-commerce businesses have gradually implemented the requirements of the non-biodegradable plastic product ban and promoted the policies to third-party merchants in Hainan. These companies are studying the requirements of the ban and formulating rules and policies to prohibit the sale of prohibited goods to customers in Hainan.
