Duty-free in Hainan: Sales of over 20 brands rank #1 globally

Statistics released by the Department of Commerce of Hainan Province on June 4th showed that Hainan’s island departure duty-free shopping sales are brisk, with over 20 brands including Estée Lauder , Cartier, Bulgari, and Tiffany seeing sales per store topping the global travel retail rankings.

After China released the master plan for the Hainan Free Trade Port on June 1, 2020, duty-free shops across Hainan made duty-free sales worth 45.5 billion yuan (about 7.11 billion dollars) as of May 31 this year, a year-on-year increase of 236%.

Over the past year, Hainan welcomed a total of 8.77 million island departure duty-free shoppers, a year-on-year increase of 144%, and saw sales of a total of 47 million duty-free shopping items, a year-on-year increase of 152%.

The number of island departure duty-free shop operators in Hainan has increased from two to six, with the number of duty-free shops increasing to 10, covering a combined total area of 210,000 square meters.

With the number of international brands sold in Hainan’s duty-free shops increasing from less than 100 to 650 at present, the variety of goods has also increased, with everything from perfume and cosmetics to jewelry, watches, luggage, clothing, electronic products and other commodities now available.

Additionally, Hainan has launched measures and policies to promote commercial development and boost consumer spending. Since last May, total retail sales growth of consumer goods in Hainan has turned from negative to positive, reaching 197.46 billion yuan (about 30.84 billion dollars) for the whole year, a year-on-year increase of 1.2%.
