Among the population of 18 years and above in Haikou, 75% (1.65 million) have received their first shot of the Covid-19 vaccine, the Hainan Provincial Health Commission said. By May 15, more than 2.78 million doses of the vaccine had been administered.

Over 1.12 million people have been fully vaccinated, accounting for 51 percent of the total adult population.

Haikou is expected to complete administering 3.6 million doses to reach the target vaccination rate of 75 percent of the whole population.

Since April 13, Haikou has also been vaccinating people from appropriate age groups from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and expats at seven sites. As of May 15, these groups had received 395 doses of the vaccine. They consisted of 171 doses for individuals from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan as well as 224 for expats from 34 foreign countries.

According to clinical trial data and previous experience in the prevention and control of epidemics, only when the vaccination rate reaches 75 percent or more can the regional transmission of the disease be curbed. A high vaccination rate can reduce the incidence of serious illness and death rate as well.
