Live the island life: Six unique Hainan islands to visit

The May Day Holiday has arrived! How is your vacation going? Need to spice it up? What better way to live the Hainan island life than visiting a few of the many small islands scattered off the coast of the province, each with their own unique charm? There are tons of water sports to try, like parasailing, jet-skiing, and banana boat rides, plus you can dive or snorkel to see the colorful tropical corals that thrive in the crystal-clear water surrounding the islands. Check out six unique islands to visit in Hainan below.

 

West Island, Sanya

Known as a diving destination, West Island boasts a special diving area, which is also a national coral reef nature reserve. Here you can dive deep in the sea, and have the fun of being surrounded by coral reefs and darting shoals of vibrantly colored fish.

In addition, you can stroll through the 400 year-old fishing village, experiencing the fishing life and listening to local folk songs about the sea. You can also go fishing off the eastern coast of West Island, which is equipped with several facilities allowing visitors to enjoy tea and gentle music as they fish.

Wuzhizhou Island, Sanya

Nanwan Monkey Island, Lingshui

Nanwan Monkey Island, the only tropical island nature reserve for macaques in the world, is home to more than 400 species of tropical plants, about 100 species of animals, and over 2,500 macaques, a national second-class protected species, giving it the name Monkey Island.

The Nanwan Monkey Island Ecological Tourism Area consists of the Monkey Island Park and Daidai Island. Taking the cable car on a journey high above the sea, you will have a birds eye view of the spectacular scenery below, including the fishing rafts of the Danjia Boat People and the port, as well as clean, entrancing beaches and palm trees swaying in the cool sea breeze.

Ocean Flower Island, Danzhou

Ocean Flower Island, an artificial archipelago off the north coast of Danzhou City, was designed by a team of over 600 world-class architects at a cost of 160 billion yuan (US$24 billion). It consists of three independent islets covering a total area of 381 hectares (940 acres).

Dazhou Island, Wanning

Dazhou Island, located about 5 km off the coast of Wanning City, is the only state-level marine nature reserve in China as well as the largest desert island along the Hainan coastline. It covers an area of 4.36 square kilometres and is comprised of three mountains spanning two islands.

It's also home to freewheeling flocks of acrobatic, endangered swiftlets. The warm, crystal-clear tropical waters surrounding the island offer snorkelers views of colorful fish and quite a few other marine creatures.
