Haikou's Sanqing Village first shows up in the historical record over 800 years ago. Resting on the edge of an extinct volcano's caldera, the unique culture of the village has been heavily influenced by its surroundings. Even now, tourists can still visit many of the ancient volcano stone houses which still stand as witness to nearly a thousand years of history and culture.
