The first China International Consumer Products Expo (hereinafter referred to as the Hainan Expo) mascots named Yuan Yuan and Xiao Xiao, or "Yuan Xiao" for the combined pair, were officially revealed at a press conference held in Haikou on March 18, which marked the 50 days remaining in the countdown before the event begins. The mascots are based on the image of the beloved Hainan Gibbon.

According to Mr. Ruslan Tulenov, Global Media Officer of the Hainan Provincial Bureau of International Economic Development, there are three main reasons for the Hainan Expo to choose the image of the Hainan gibbon for its mascots. The first is to embody Hainan, with the Hainan Gibbon being the rarest primate in the world and also being unique to Hainan. The second is to show the high-quality orientation of the Expo, as the image of the rare Hainan gibbons fits well with the high-quality consumer goods to be exhibited. The third is to emphasize ecological protection, as the Hainan Expo will highlight the concepts of environment-friendly shopping and exhibition.

The mascots "Yuan Xiao", with the female gibbon named Yuan Yuan and the male named Xiao Xiao, sound like the Hainan gibbon and the Hainan Expo in Chinese, implying that the "Hainan gibbons invite you to participate in the Hainan Expo".

In addition, "Yuan Xiao" is one of the names of a Chinese traditional festival, the Lantern Festival, which represents warmth, celebration and reunion. Thus, the name of the mascots not only highlights the festive atmosphere of the Hainan Expo, but also symbolizes the grand reunion of global leading brands and boutique products from all around the world.

The first Hainan Expo will be held in Haikou from May 7 to 10. As of now, all the exhibition attraction work has been completed. The planned exhibition area of the first Hainan Expo is 80,000 square meters. The international exhibition area is 60,000 square meters, and over 600 exhibitors and more than 1,000 brands plan to participate in the first Hainan Expo.
