For the Spring Festival travel season this year, to support the country’s COVID-19 epidemic prevention work, many people in China have adjusted their holiday travel plans and chosen to travel in or near the places they work and live.  This year, according to Trip.com, one of the world’s leading providers of travel services, the most popular destinations for rental car road trips over Chinese New Year were Haikou and Sanya, two picturesque cities in China’s tropical southern island province of Hainan.

Statistics also show two notable travel trends: car rental and staying in hotels. Renting a car for a road trip is considered safer, more convenient, and more budget-friendly for travelers. When provided with large discounts and upgraded car rental services, more and more travelers are showing an interest in renting a car for their vacation. Meanwhile, the top 10 domestic cities for hotel bookings during Spring Festival were Shanghai, Beijing, Sanya, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Zhuhai, and Suzhou, with 4-star and 5-star hotels receiving up to 60% of all orders and Atlantis Sanya, a fun-filled, family resort hotel featuring the Aquaventure Waterpark taking the top spot as the most popular hotel choice.

As for flight bookings, the peak days for return flights during the holiday were February 16 and 17, with Sanya-Shanghai, Sanya-Beijing and Beijing-Sanya ranking the top 3 most popular flight routes. The Beijing-Sanya flight route was still the third most popular at the end of the holiday, showcasing the great allure that Sanya holds for travelers even after the Spring Festival holiday. It is also worth mentioning that economy class ticket prices dropped sharply throughout the holiday period, with the ticket price for Sanya-Shanghai dropping by 70%.
