Malaysian singer Mai Eng produced and sang a Hainanese song "Gong Yi Wat Sai" (which means "we wish you a prosperous New Year") with her friends to welcome the Year of the Ox. This song has been published on platforms such as TikTok and Youtube.
On the occasion of Spring Festival, New Year’s songs are popular in Malaysia, but most of them are usually sung in Chinese and other dialects from other provinces across China. Mai Eng, a descendant of people from Wenchang City, Hainan province, wanted to produce a New Year’s song in Hainanese to promote the culture of Hainan during this festive season.
“Through this joyful song, I also want to wish all Hainanese around the world a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year,” said Mai Eng.
