On November 11th, the 2020 Hainan Gibbon Survey was launched in Bawangling, part of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. This survey involved the largest number of survey agencies and personnel since the start of the annual Hainan Gibbon Survey, and it is the first time that drone technology has been used to assist.
Researchers were deployed to the 8 stations located in Changjiang and Baisha by noon on the 11th to carry out the survey. On November 12th, researchers heard and recorded the song of a gibbon family in Futou Mountain. The haunting cries of the Gibbon are known as the "Voice of Hainan".
According to experts on the research team, the first morning call of the gibbon family was heard around 5 a.m. on the 12th, which was earlier than usual, as Hainan Gibbons usually begin their morning calls at the first rays of dawn or when the sun rises.
The survey mainly focused on the Hainan Gibbon’s habitat, diet, living habits, reproduction, and other important metrics pertaining to the Gibbons. The data obtained will be used to assist in the protection of these island treasures.
