Since China released the master plan for the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port in early June, a series of follow-up policies have made Hainan constantly become the focus of attention at home and abroad in the past month, especially the latest offshore duty-free policy announced on June 29.

This policy has attracted the attention of Moodie Davitt Report, an authoritative research institute for the duty-free industry, which issued the key details of the policy and promoted the investment opportunities for the duty-free industry in the Hainan Free Trade Port.

On July 1, the first day when the new offshore duty-free policy took effect, reporter of Hainan International Media Center rendered an exclusive interview online with Martin Moodie, founder and CEO of Moodie Davitt Report, under the coordination of the Hainan International Economic Development Bureau.

"I think today is a landmark day for the travel retail and duty-free industry worldwide," said Martin Moodie, adding that this new policy in Hainan is a tremendously positive news for global travel industry.

He regarded the policy as a most farsighted government's policy in the world. "Increasing the duty-free shopping quota for fashion, jewelry, watches, etc., is a big boost for these industries and very beneficial for the brands, retailers and consumers," he spoke highly of the new policy in Hainan.

As a world-renowned research organization for the duty-free industry, Moodie has conducted statistical research on the preferences of consumers around the world. "Beauty products are the most popular, especially skin care products and cosmetics," Martin Moodie said that luxury goods such as watches, apparel, jewelry, and liquor such as whiskey and Chinese liquor are also popular among consumers.

On July 1, Martin Moodie, the founder and CEO of The Moodie Davitt Report was interviewed by HIMC English reporter.

So for the duty-free shops in Hainan, in Moodie's view, the goods with local characteristics and familiar international brands may attract many consumers. He said that Hainan has expand the categories of duty-free goods and added electronic products such as mobile phones, tablet computers, electronic watches, etc., which has a huge market potential.

Moodie has visited Hainan five times, and conducted research tours in the duty-free shops. "Hainan is a great place with beautiful beaches, delicious food, and hospitable people," he said, adding that the new offshore duty-free policy will provide important benefits for hotels, restaurants, and tourism, and will lead the local society, economy, and people's livelihood to a new era.
