Paddies of golden rice rippling in the wind can mean only one thing: it’s harvest time once again! On May 28, the 4th Qiongshan ‘Fu’ Rice Harvest Festival was held in Bohou Village, Hongqi Town in Haikou’s Qiongshan District, marking the start of harvesting of over 3,300 hectares of “Qiongshan Fu” variety rice grown at the Qiongshan ‘Fu’ Rice Planting Base.

The planting of a single grain brings hope and joy to many. Statistics show that, since the “Qiongshan Fu” variety began to be widely promoted four years ago, farming communities in the area have rushed to plant it. The Qiongshan ‘Fu’ Rice Planting Base is Hainan’s largest single privately owned rice growing cooperative, and its membership continues to swell. In 2021, the cooperative had 4,300 households, growing to 4,600 in 2022. The per mu income for these households has also grown, from 3,200 yuan in 2021 to 3,400 in 2022. Additionally, annual yields have increased from 680 kg per mu in 2022 to 700 kg in 2023.

At the festival, women from across Hongqi Town took part in a rice harvesting race. The deft movements of their sickles and their willingness to get stuck in bring a new, bountiful meaning to “fast and furious.”  A painters’ corner was set up by the paddies for parents and their kids to capture their memories of the day with paints and brushes. At the festival market, villagers from the local area plied their wares, including fresh farm goods, local snacks, and hand-made souvenirs, promoting the best that Qiongshan has to offer. Join Jimmy as he joins in the celebrations and tries his hand at the activities. Let’s hope he managed to keep his fingers!
