As China’s southern province of Hainan continues to lift restrictions on pandemic prevention and control, a rebound in tourism numbers has been observed at local airports as the peak winter travel season arrives.

According to a representative from Trip.com—an online Chinese travel agency—during the recent New Year period, online orders for airline tickets to Hainan were up 17%, and accommodation reservations in the province up by 34% compared to the same period last year. Single-trip air tickets to Hainan averaged 1,288 yuan (about $186.5) during this period, 60% higher than a year earlier.

The rebound in travel numbers is also heating up the province's duty-free shopping market, a pillar industry for the development of the free trade island.

According to the local customs office, daily sales at Hainan’s eleven duty-free stores reached over 100 million yuan (about $14.5 million) over the seven consecutive days from December 13-19.

In addition to the loosening of social-distancing restrictions, another reason for the increase could be the discounts of 10 million yuan in consumer vouchers that the local government handed out at the annual Hainan Island Carnival on December 23rd. In addition, a two-month duty-free shopping carnival also began on the island in early December.
