In Hainan, there are many tasty snacks that you can enjoy during Spring Festival. Each snack has its own special meaning. In Wenchang, there is a saying that "It’s not a feast without a chicken, and it’s not Spring Festival without Tanggong". Tanggong is a sweet Hainan peanut square.

In Fenghui Village, Wenchang, many villagers still follow the tradition of making Tanggong to celebrate Spring Festival. The tradition of making Tanggong can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty. In the past, only large village families were able to make Tanggong. The reason it is called Tanggong is that because in ancient times it was sent to emperors in tribute.

But, nowadays, since people’s living conditions are better, Tanggong is an ordinary Spring Festival snack. People can make as much Tanggong as they want and share it with their friends and family.

Some Overseas Chinese who come back to visit Hainan always bring some Tanggong back to their home countries. As one of Hainan's Chinese New Year treats, Tanggong is more than just good wishes, it is also the flavor of home.

Today, let’s follow Inira, the host of this episode, to learn how to make Tanggong.
