Art of drying salt: Backbreaking labor turns seawater to gold

Since ancient times, salt has not only been a necessity of life, but has also played a key role in Chinese history and economic development. As early as 5,000 years ago, the ancient Chinese started to make salt from seawater. In Yantian Village on the Yangpu Peninsula in Danzhou, Hainan, the hardworking, smart locals have made salt using the power of the sun in this way for a thousand years.

In this episode of the documentary of "Hainan Seen Through the Lens of Culture", we will tell you the story of Tan Zheng, an 84-year-old man who is passing down the ancient art of drying sea salt in the village, as well as the story about how the salt workers bend their backs to turn saltwater into gold.
