The 2021 South China Sea fishing moratorium, which lasts for three and a half months annually, ended at 12:00 on August 16. A number of Hainan fishing boats have now resumed operation.
In the early hours of the morning, these hard-working women walk to the crowded, bustling wharf by the light of the moon and stars. They hurry back and forth between baskets overflowing with fish, their voices echoing off the water as they make bargain after bargain. They are busy selecting the best fish on the boats, ordering decisively, carrying and packing the seafood, loading it on their cars, transporting ice, and making bargains every day, all day, until the fading light of sunset lights their weary way home.
