There is an old saying in Danzhou: The ancient trees in this history-rich city in Hainan can overshadow any other trees in the province.

Danzhou’s ancient trees are a unique landscape and witness to its long history.

In recent years, the city is protecting its ancient and famous trees by registering them. The municipal authorities have put a sign on each of the gentile giants, which are like their calling cards. These signs provide information about the tree and indicate it’s under protection. In this way, they both draw tourist attention and raise people's awareness of the need to protect ancient trees.

In the village, the older generations tell the younger ones about the stories, benefits and secrets of the ancient trees, which continue to be a source of wonder. For instance, a venerable lychee tree, certified by the authorities as being over 500 years old, is known as the Yin-Yang tree because it produces both sweet and sour fruits. Yin and yang are the opposite and complementary forces of life. The old trees also offer a canopy for the children, shading them from the sun as they play.
