Located west of Sanya City, Yazhou Old Town was originally built in 1198 and was Hainan’s center of politics, economy, culture, education, and military life in ancient times. During the Qin and Han Dynasties, this old town was a vital stop on the Maritime Silk Road.

Today, the area is like an open-air museum which boasts both historic relics and a profound culture. Located in this old town, Yacheng Village is a peaceful place that is nevertheless full of life, a place where locals live their lives according to their own wisdom.

In the yards of some of the ancient houses, the original screen walls still remain intact, covered in delicate, auspicious patterns. According to local beliefs, sunshine shining on this special wall brings good luck to the people living in the house.

The Wenming Gate (Civilization Gate), famed as "the first gate of the motherland in the south", not only witnessed the glory of the ancient generals and ministers of the state, but has also carried the hopes and dreams of ordinary people for more than 1,000 years.

Yacheng Academy, also known as Yacheng Confucius Temple, is the southernmost Confucius Temple in China, and is called "the first temple at the end of the earth". In 2013, with the approval of the State Council, Yacheng Academy was listed in the seventh batch of national key cultural relic protection units.
