FAQ: Covid-19 Vaccine for expats in Haikou

By Nicki Johnson / HICN / Updated: 11:38,19-April-2021

On April 13, Haikou opened seven sites where expats and those from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macao regions who fit the age requirements may be vaccinated against Covid-19.

As of now, a total of 28 vaccines have been administered to expats from Switzerland, the USA, Canada, and other countries, while 13 vaccines have been administered to those from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macao regions. In order to make getting vaccinated more convenient and to spread awareness of the vaccine process, a bilingual Chinese / English version of the Covid-19 Vaccine Guide and the Informed Consent Form have been put in place at the seven expat vaccine sites.

Covid-19 Vaccine FAQ:

The following are answers to the eight most frequently asked vaccine questions by expats in Haikou.

Q1:What is the age requirement for the COVID-19 vaccination?

A1: Expats aged 18 and above in Haikou are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccination.

Q2:What type of vaccines will be given?

A2: China's domestic inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccines (Sinovac and Sinopharm) will be given, and two doses are required.

Q3:What documents are required for vaccination?

A3: Expats should present their passports and current residence permits at the vaccination site. These documents are required at both the first and second vaccine appointments. If you have proof of Chinese medical insurance or social insurance, you will also need to show these in order to receive the vaccine at no charge. If you don’t have proof of insurance, you will need to pay for both the first and second vaccine dose at the time of your second vaccine appointment.

Q4:What papers should I sign?

A4: Before getting the vaccine, you should sign both an informed consent form and a statement accepting personal responsibility for all risks associated with  the vaccine. Please take all necessary precautions and inform the medical staff of your current health conditions so that they can decide whether or not it is suitable for you to receive the vaccine at this time.

Q5:What do I need to do before and after getting the vaccine?

A5: Rest well and avoid alcohol the day before vaccination, and be sure to eat nutritious meals on the day of vaccination. Stay at the vaccination site for 30 minutes after you receive your vaccine for observation. After the observation period is complete, if you have had no adverse reactions you are free to leave. If you develop a persistent fever, seek medical assistance immediately.

Q6:How can I get a vaccination certificate?

A6: Expats can get proof of vaccination at the vaccination site after receiving the second vaccine dose.

Q7:Do I need to wear a mask after being vaccinated?

A7: Vaccination will provide immunity from COVID-19 and greatly reduce your risk of infection. However, no vaccine is 100% effective. Some people may have insufficient antibodies after being vaccinated and may still be vulnerable to infection. So it is still important to wear a mask, wash your hands regularly, and maintain social distancing.

Q8:Do I still have to take a nucleic acid test after being vaccinated? Can my vaccine certificate substitute for a nucleic acid test report?

A8: Being vaccinated can reduce infection risks, but no vaccine is 100% effective. When necessary, expats should still take a nucleic acid test as required.
