The 2021 Annual Conference of the Boao Forum for Asia is approaching, and this year marks its 20th anniversary. On March 31st, ten contributors who, during the past two decades, have devoted themselves to the development of the Boao Forum, were invited to share their experiences and significant achievements at the Forum.
As a window for the world to get to know Hainan, the Boao Forum bears a great deal of responsibility to show a positive image of Hainan to attendees from around the globe.
Zhu Chunzhi, Deputy General Manager of the Haikou Meilan International Airport Aviation and Operations Management Department, felt quite stressed when she was assigned to be in charge of the airport logistics support for the Forum in 2001, the year that the Boao Forum for Asia was founded.
Back then, the airport facilities and services were not developed enough to serve such a large number of international guests. To compensate for their lack of experience and gain structured guidance, Zhu and her team headed to Shanghai, where they received training and gained expertise.
“There is no best, only better,” stated Zhu. After twenty years of striving for perfection, the team now enjoys great prestige with guests from all over the world. “We even received a thank-you note from Japanese dignitaries,” said Zhu proudly, “I’m glad to see that in the past 20 years, Boao has developed from a little-known town to the world-famed venue of a global event, and the Boao Forum has also been transformed from an idea into an international event.”
Liu Jingwen, Deputy Director of the Industry Management and Safety Supervision Division of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television, and Sports of Hainan Province, is also “picky about details”. In order to remove a musty smell from hotel rooms, which actually is a common problem in coastal cities like Boao, Liu invited professional odor removal companies to carry out testing in the rooms one by one. But from where she stands, that is exactly how Hainan forms its high-end brand of service. “The service of the Boao Hotel now can represent the highest level of service in the Hainan hotel industry,” she commented.
In addition to the improving service standards of the BFA, Zhang Dongdong, Division Director of Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan Province, was delighted to spot rapid progress in both the brick-and-mortar facilities in Hainan as well as the mindset of the local people. “I am looking forward to the day when people will say that Davos Forum is the Boao Forum of the west,” said Zhang.
