On February 25, a grand gathering to mark Chinas accomplishments in poverty eradication was held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, the capital of China. Chinese President Xi Jinping, also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, delivered a speech and honored model poverty fighters, proudly announcing a complete victory in China's fight against poverty.

At the gathering, a total of 30 individuals and 23 groups from Hainan were honored for their efforts in the cause. So far, the island province has lifted 640,970 people out of poverty and removed 600 impoverished villages and 5 impoverished counties from the poverty list.

However, China realizes that this victory in poverty eradication is by no means the finishing line, but is instead the starting point of a new endeavor. In the countrys goals of the 14th Five-Year Plan, the strategy of rural development has been retargeted to include the consolidation of poverty alleviation as well as rural revitalization. On the same day that China announced that it eradicated extreme poverty across the nation, Chinas National Rural Revitalization Bureau officially opened, replacing the State Councils poverty alleviation office.
