In the first half of 2026, the value of China's total product imports and exports reached 25.47 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 16.9%. Hainan's foreign trade growth ranked second out of China’s 31 provinces, highlighting the Free Trade Port’s open policy environment.
Hainan’s strong performance was mainly driven by FTP policy benefits. The continued expansion of the ‘Zero Tariff’ list and the implementation of a duty-free policy permitting processing of value-added products have reduced import costs for corporations, leading to the formation of of high-value-added processing and manufacturing industry clusters. Raising the duty-free shopping quota and expanding duty-free product categories has further stimulated the consumer product import and export sector, making Hainan a popular gateway for products from around the world entering the Chinese market.
Hainan is also focusing on cultivating new trade formats. The cross-border e-commerce, bonded repair, and digital trade sectors are growing rapidly, injecting new momentum into foreign trade. The proportion of green, low-carbon, and high-tech exports is steadily increasing, and both new and green types of foreign trade are becoming increasingly prominent.
Hainan has also benefited strongly from the diversification of trading partners. Trade ties between Hainan and members of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), particularly ASEAN countries, are becoming increasingly close. Significant progress has been made in expanding Belt and Road Initiative markets, and Hainan's foreign trade network continues to grow.
Meanwhile, Hainan is working to optimize cross-border settlement services and increase credit insurance support to help companies increase orders and expand markets. With the steady progress of island-wide special customs operations, Hainan's institutional opening-up is expected to release even greater dividends, offering international investors and traders a more transparent and convenient business environment.
